Share Your Setup. Buy, Sell, Catalogue. Check Record Prices. There are hundreds of this type of thing out there. So many different comps on all different labels of varying legitimacy. Really doesn't matter what you look for, go to the oldies bin at your local record store and go nuts. That said, you won't beat the originals for authenticity, and in most cases, the sound quality won't be topped either since these comps are typically just dubbed from the 45s the songs were originally released on.
The exception to this is the Vintage Music Collectors Series that MCA put out on CD & LP in the late 80's. They're the only oldies comps I ever enjoyed.
Definitely get volume 1. Really top notch soundwise, even if still very inauthentic. TV mail order albums from Candlelight Music, Lakeshore Music, Heartland Music etc. Tend to be pretty fabulous, with mastering that's better than you'd expect (for the most part). Rhino Records' 'Billboard' comps sound fantastic and have a lot of the biggest hits for their respective year.
Time-Life Music's stunning 'The Rock and Roll Era' series was partially released on vinyl and can often be found for cheap. (They're all two records in an elaborately illustrated box.
Can't miss 'em.) Sound quality is a little hit-and-miss on the early volumes, but it's all original hits and the lineup is stellar. The Original Sound 'Oldies But Goodies' series is great on vinyl, although the sources are hit and miss. Lots of doo-wop. Try for mono copies if you can find them. The early volumes have all the romantic songs on the same side.
(Side note: The mastering on the CD versions is awful. Avoid those like the plague.) Roulette released a lot of excellent comps as well. Again, avoid the 'simulated stereo' versions if you can. Radio stations in the mid-to-late-60s put out a lot of fly-by-night oldies comps with contents that skewed toward what was big in their particular market (thus you might find some local hits that didn't break nationally). They're on labels like 'Post' and 'Take 6'.
They tend to be dubbed from 45s and sound rather tinny, but they're usually slam-packed with small-label garage classics. (I think 'Dirty Water' is on ALL of them for some reason.) And this may sound nuts, but do take a peak at those Readers Digest, Longines Symphonette, and Columbia Musical Treasury box sets you find cluttering up the thrifts. The vast majority are doggerel, but they did occasionally burp out a compilation you might enjoy.
If it's a 1950s comp on Columbia, make sure it's got a LOT of cuts licensed from other labels or you'll be buried in lugubrious 1950s white pop. Columbia didn't do rock and roll AT ALL until the 1960s.
AVOID K-tel (and their subsidiary label Era), unless it's 1980s hits. Their sound quality is usually ass, and for their oldies comps they usually used cheaply recorded remakes done in the 1970s, rather than the original hits. They also shortened the songs by snipping verses out of them.
ALWAYS read the fine print on the scruddier-looking comps. They're supposed to tell you if they're using 'stereo remakes by one or more members of the original group'. Also avoid the Gusto/Starday/King labels, unless you're being assisted by someone who knows their stuff. Lots of remake-tainted crap got put out by those guys, which is too bad. The King back catalog is pretty awesome. Avoid any and all compilations made in Italy.
Just trust me here. You'll see a lot of comps on Laurie Records.
They'll usually have 7 or 8 major hits (invariably including Dion and/or the Belmonts), and the rest will be turkeys dredged out of the Laurie vaults. Approach with caution.
Buku bahasa arab mts pdf.
Chiming back in to add a few other labels you're likely to see in the compilation section of the record store: Pickwick, Design, Trip, Springboard, and Audio Fidelity. Sound quality is usually bad-to-horrendous. Also steer clear of anything on Vee-Jay with more than 8 cuts per side.
Liberty and Mercury had series similar to the Oldies But Goodies albums with a lot of licensed cuts. OK-to-good sound, and mostly from tapes. Get the mono versions. There's also something called a 'label compilation', where a record company assembles an entire collection of hits they released themselves. Cameo/Parkway/Wyncote and Motown/Tamla/Gordy were the most notorious hawkers of such comps. They contain the original single versions from the original tapes, but suffer from lack of variety for obvious reasons.
I tend to seek these out. They're a great way to get pristine copies of rare original mixes that can otherwise only be found on the damn styrene 45s. There's a series called 'Cruisin' that's common and perhaps of interest. It mixes hit songs with old DJ airchecks. It's been a while since I've heard one, but I vaguely recall that I was unimpressed, probably due to sound quality. Not sure if they were original hits or not. Why am I going on about mono?
Because there's this thing called 'simulated stereo' that tends to infest such compilation albums. They take a mono recording and doctor it to (supposedly) make stereo out of it. The result can range from a barely perceptible change, to unlistenable reverby mush, with many compilations from the 1970s falling into the latter category. In all cases, the recording has been through additional processing which adds generation loss. It's a huge problem when you're dealing with 1950s rock and roll, most of which was not recorded in stereo.
Mono albums will also usually give you the original single mixes, which are often different (and better) than their stereo counterparts. By the mid 1980s most compilers were over the whole fake stereo thing (you can thank CDs for that) so 1980s comps are often your best source for classic hits in great sound, either original mono or genuine stereo. Can vouch that the American Graffiti soundtrack is a good overview-type set that's easy to come. It's mostly fake stereo, but it's mostly not bad fake stereo.
